FLORIDA COSMETOLOGY SKINCARE LICENSES INFORMATION

APPLY FOR

The skin protects the inside of the body from the external abrasive agents found in our environment. Therefore, in cosmetology, there are individuals who specialize in how to take good care of the skin in order for it to be healthy.  Skin specialists, also called estheticians, have a promising future in Florida, where the sun tends to cause serious consequences to the skin.  If you want to know how to get an esthetician license, first take into consideration that Florida does not issue specific esthetician licenses. You can obtain a cosmetologist or full specialist license and then practice as an esthetician. You also have the option to apply for a license in two skin care specializations: facial specialization and body wrapping.

First, you must be at least 16 years old or hold a high school diploma or GED to apply. None of the specialties require you to take an exam.

For the specializations, the requirements are different:

  • Facial specialist:
  1. Complete 260 school hours in a facial specialty program (approved by the Board of Cosmetology of Florida)
  2. Submit the HIV/AIDS course completion certificate course.
  3. Pay the $85 facial specialist license fee
  • Body wrapper:
  1. Complete a two-day, 12-hour body wrapping course (approved by the Board of cosmetology of Florida)
  2. Pay the $30 body wrapping license fee

To apply for a skin care license, visit:

http://myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/pro/cosmo/index.html. Once there, click on “Apply for/Update Licenses” and choose cosmetology. Then, select facial specialist registration (COSMO 1) or body wrapper registration (COSMO5). Finally, choose between applying online and using a mail application. If you apply online, use a credit card or electronic check. If you mail the application, use a check payable to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

UPDATE

Regardless if you moved to a different location changed your name after marriage, divorce, widowhood or any personal reason, you will have to ask the Board to update the information associated to your cosmetology license.

The first question that may come to your mind is: How much do I have to pay to update the information? Well, if you decide change the information and issue an updated license, you must pay a $25 fee. You will submit a check payable to Department of Business and Professional Regulation. If you just want to change the information on the database, no fee will be required.

Before you change the name or address on your skin care license, you must go to the website of the Board of Cosmetology of Florida, click either on the “Apply for/Update Licenses” section or on the “Forms and Publications” section and look for a form called “Individual - Request for Duplicate License, Name Change, Address Change, or Status Change (COSMO 11).” You will include your license number, name, email address and phone number in this form.

To change the name on the skin care license, write your new name in section III of the form. Additionally, a document showing name change —such as marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order— will be requested by the Board as a proof of your name change. To change the address on the skin care license, you will only fill out section IV of the form and submit it, no other documents will be necessary. If you prefer to do it online, click on “renew my license”.  In both cases, fill the “Affirmation by Written Declaration” in section VI of the form.

REPLACE

Since Florida requests all cosmetologists to display their license where they work, your esthetician license should always be with you. What if you lost your cosmetology license? Or what should you do if it got stolen or destroyed? Do not panic, but rush and ask for a replacement if you want to avoid the $100 fine.

First, you should know that for a skincare license replacement, you must pay a $25 fee. You will submit a check payable to Department of Business and Professional Regulation.  The only exception is when the license is stolen and you can prove it with a police report.

To request a duplicate skincare license, you have to go to the website of the Board of Cosmetology of Florida. Once here, click on “Apply for/Update Licenses” and click on “Apply Using a Printable Application”, or go to “Forms and Publications” and download the form called “Individual - Request for Duplicate License, Name Change, Address Change, or Status Change (COSMO 11).”

  • Facial specialist:
  1. Print out the form.
  2. Fill out the information.
  3. In section I, select the type of transaction: “Duplicate License Request [8001].”
  4. In section II, select the type of licenses you hold, mark “Facial Specialist.”
  5. Indicate the reason for the duplicate request.
  6. Fill the “Affirmation by Written Declaration” in section VI of the form.

Transfer

Skincare specialists who studied and got licensed in any other state different than Florida have the chance to beautify the skin of Florida’s residents. Florida offers licensure by endorsement to those who went to a beauty school in another state or those licensed by other state’s board and who want to transfer their skin care license to the Sunshine State.  You will be eligible to apply by endorsement if you have a current registration or license in another state and the requirements are similar or greater than Florida’s.

If you are interested in transferring your esthetician license you first must know that Florida has license for full specialists (nails and skin), facial specialists and body wrappers. However, a body wrapper license is not eligible for endorsement.

The requirements to apply by endorsement are the following:

  • Full specialist
  1. Be at least 16 years of age.
  2. 240 hours of nail specialty training and 260 hours of facial specialty training, for a total of 500 hours or more of training (similar to, equivalent to or greater than the qualifications required of applicants from Florida)
  3. Complete a board-approved Initial HIV/AIDS course and submit the course completion certificate with your application.
  4. Provide an official certification of the licensure from the state’s board where the individual is licensed (a copy of the license will not be accepted).
  5. Pay a $85 endorsement fee.
  • Facial specialist
  1. Be at least 16 years of age.
  2. 260 hours of facial specialist training (similar to, equivalent to or greater than the qualifications required of applicants from Florida)
  3. Complete a board-approved Initial HIV/AIDS course and submit the course completion certificate with your application.
  4. Provide an official certification of the licensure from the state’s board where the individual is licensed (a copy of the license will not be accepted).
  5. Pay a $85 endorsement fee.

If you meet the requirements, visit http://myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/pro/cosmo/index.html and apply. To do so, click on “Apply for/Update Licenses” and choose cosmetology. At this point, select Full Specialist Registration by Endorsement (COSMO 4-A) or Facial Specialist Registration by Endorsement (COSMO 4-A).  Choose if you want to submit your application online or to download, print it and mail the form.

EDUCATION

In Florida, estheticians are called facial specialists. Facial specialists keep their customer’s skin healthy and young with cleansings and exfoliations, massages, body wraps. They treat the face or scalp with oils, creams, lotions, or other preparations. Cosmetologists learn the basics of skincare; however, facial specialists and body wrappers are the experts.

If you are interested in the skincare area of cosmetology, you have to apply at an esthetician school or you can also choose a body wrapping or full specialist course. For both scenarios, you must be at least 16 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED. With that in mind, start looking for a state-approved esthetician training. The course must be approved by the Cosmetology Board and accredited by The National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). The cost of an esthetician course ranges between $5000 and $7000.

The length of the courses is usually around two weeks since the minimum required amount of hours for the licensure is 260. Facial specialists are not required to take an examination. You can also choose a full specialist program in which you will learn a combination of nail and facial specialization. These programs cost around $10000 and last 500-600 hours.

You also have the option to become a body wrapper. Body wrappers use presoaked herbal wraps to cleanse and beautify the skin. A body wrapper course costs from $300 to $500 and lasts around two days. The required amount of hours to obtain the license is 12.
